As Parliament rises for summer recess, our country enters a new chapter. I want to thank Keir Starmer for his dedicated leadership. His premiership leaves a strong legacy: a growing economy, the fastest fall in NHS waiting lists in almost two decades, major investment in infrastructure, the biggest increase in defence spending since the Cold War, stronger rights for workers and renters, and action that has helped lift half a million children out of poverty. In the leadership contest, I nominated Andy Burnham to be Leader of the Labour Party and the next Prime Minister. I look forward to hearing his vision for our country’s future.
It’s been a busy time in my role as Minister for Building Safety, Fire and Democracy. I announced tough new measures to protect the integrity of our elections, including stronger checks on company donations, limits on large donations from individuals recently returning from overseas, and new requirements for candidates to prove campaign funding comes from legitimate sources. The Representation of the People Bill will be returning to the House of Commons in September. On Monday evening, I also responded to a debate on embodied carbon in buildings.
This week also saw the Hillsborough Law pass through the Commons. This vital legislation establishes a legal duty of candour during inquiries and investigations, helping ensure the truth can never again be hidden from bereaved families. It is a lasting tribute to the determination of the families of the 97 who tragically lost their lives at the Hillsborough Stadium.
It was very concerning to hear of the tragic murder of Ann Widdecombe, a long-standing figure in our political landscape. The tributes paid in Parliament were moving and heartfelt. I hope the police investigation is successful and the culprit brought to justice.
Locally, it was a pleasure to attend the first board meeting of Pride in Place – Proud of Blacon, where local people are helping shape how £20 million will be invested in their community. We’ll be working hard to capture all the views of people living in Blacon about what they want for their local area.
My National Year of Reading constituency tour continues, with visits to Chester Cathedral’s historic library and Upton Library. I’m now looking to visit independent bookshops across the constituency, so if you have a favourite, please let me know.
I will continue holding regular advice surgeries throughout the summer. If there is anything I can help with, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
