Every life lost on our roads is a tragedy that devastates families and communities. It is something no one ever truly recovers from, and I know just how close this issue is to many people across Chester North and Neston. Following events last year, many residents, parents and schools have contacted me to share their concerns about road safety. I have heard directly how frightening dangerous roads can feel, especially for children, older people and those simply trying to get from A to B safely.

That’s why I am pleased the Government has launched its new Road Safety Strategy, the first of its kind in over a decade. After years of inaction, this marks a real turning point. Around four people still lose their lives on Britain’s roads every day, and far too many of these deaths could have been prevented. This strategy sets out a clear plan to reduce deaths and serious injuries by 65% by 2035, helping to save thousands of lives.

The strategy tackles the real causes of serious collisions. It includes consultations on lowering the drink-drive limit, which has remained unchanged since 1967, tougher action against repeat offenders, and the potential use of alcohol interlock devices to prevent dangerous driving before it happens.

There is also a strong focus on young and older drivers. The Government will consult on introducing a three or six-month minimum learning period for learner drivers, giving them more time to build experience, while mandatory eyesight testing for drivers over 70 will also be considered as our population ages.

Further measures include cracking down on illegal ‘ghost’ number plates, uninsured driving and vehicles without a valid MOT, mandating 18 new vehicle safety technologies, and establishing a new Road Safety Investigation Branch and Board to oversee delivery. Importantly, this strategy recognises that road safety is a shared responsibility, with safer road design, better vehicles, strong enforcement and education all working together.

If you would like to share your views on these important issues, the consultations are available here: Road safety strategy – GOV.UK

On a separate issue, I would like to remind residents in Blacon to complete the Pride in Place survey on how £20 million will be invested in the community. The deadline is the end of January, and I’d really like to hear from you. Every voice matters. Please encourage neighbours, friends and family in Blacon to take part, and if you haven’t received a survey, please get in touch with my office on samantha.dixon.mp@parliament.uk or 01244 343 229.
