More than 8,200 households here in Chester North and Neston living in rented accommodation can celebrate this week, as Labour’s Renters’ Rights Act has now received Royal Assent.

For too long, renters have lived with insecurity, facing the constant threat of eviction through Section 21 “no fault” evictions. This landmark legislation finally brings that unfair practice to an end, making sure no one can be forced out of their home without good reason. The Act also gives renters the confidence to challenge poor conditions and unfair rent rises without fear of losing their home.

This is the most significant boost to renters’ rights in a generation. It delivers on Labour’s Plan for Change to build a fairer housing system, one where every family can enjoy the dignity and stability of a safe, secure home.

As we start the month of November, I’m also proud to welcome another major housing announcement from the Labour Government: the Defence Housing Strategy, a £9 billion plan to modernise military homes over the next decade, which represents the biggest renewal of military homes in more than 50 years.

This is the next phase in renewing forces’ accommodation, made possible by Labour’s deal to bring 36,000 forces family homes back into public ownership earlier this year, including 200 homes here in Chester North and Neston. This ended a disastrous privatisation programme started in 1996, and saves over £200 million per year in rent payments which are now being reinvested to upgrade and improve military housing and delivering homes fit for heroes.

Locally, housing is the number one issue about which people contact me, from private renters and homeowners to military families and those waiting for social housing.

That’s why, this Friday (7th November), I’m holding another of my regular Housing Surgeries to give residents direct access to advice and support from housing providers, council representatives, and local organisations.

Housing is about more than bricks and mortar. It’s about security, opportunity, and community. Under this Labour Government, we are determined to deliver decent homes for everyone.
