Chester MP Samantha Dixon has visited the iconic Northgate Arena to see first-hand the progress being made on the major refurbishment project funded by Cheshire West and Chester Council.

The multi-million-pound investment is transforming one of the city’s most well-used leisure facilities, bringing modern, accessible, and community-focused improvements to every corner of the building.

During her visit, Samantha Dixon MP toured the site and met with Brio Leisure staff and council representatives to hear more about the plans, including upgraded pool facilities, a refreshed gym, new changing areas, and the creation of new studio spaces and outdoor improvements.

The visit included a stop to check up on the beloved Northgate Arena whale in the pool area, which was confirmed to be safe and sound during the works.

Speaking during the visit, Samantha Dixon MP said:

“Northgate Arena is a special place for so many people in Chester. Generations have learned to swim here, played sports, and come together as a community. It’s brilliant to see the major investment from Cheshire West and Chester Council being used to revitalise this important space.

“The improvements being made will ensure residents have access to first-class leisure, health, and wellbeing facilities right in the heart of our city. I’m particularly pleased to see how much community feedback has shaped the project, from better changing rooms to more accessible features.

“It’s also great to see the famous whale is safe and staying put!”

Cllr Louise Gittins, Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council added:

“I am delighted that the Council has been able to contribute over £11m towards the refurbishment of Chester’s much cherished Northgate Arena, a key part of the Chester One City Plan, and ensure modern leisure and fitness facilities can continue to be provided for everyone to enjoy. I am also grateful for all the staff for enabling the centre to remain partially open to customers, with the sports hall temporarily functioning as a gym, studio, and racquet sports area.

The refurbishment will help deliver on the Council’s wider goals for health and wellbeing under the One City Plan for Chester, ensuring that Northgate Arena continues to serve as a hub for active, happy, and healthy lives for generations to come.
