Last week I attended the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool. It was a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come in Government and to set out the next steps in our mission to deliver national renewal.
In the weeks leading up to conference, many constituents got in touch asking me to visit specific stands and events and I was pleased to do so. I met with fantastic organisations like the British Heart Foundation, Dogs Trust, Dementia UK, Pancreatic Cancer UK and many more. It was a privilege to speak with them about their work and raise the issues that matter to people here at home.
The Prime Minister made it clear: this Government is about ending decline, rebuilding public services, and creating growth that reaches every part of the country. We’re already making progress. Great British Energy is expanding its solar panel rollout, now helping over 250 schools and 270 NHS sites cut bills and carbon. And our online hospital programme, launching in 2027, will deliver over 8 million extra appointments, slashing waiting times and improving access to care.
We also announced the first-ever Fair Pay Agreement in social care, backed by £500 million to improve pay and conditions for care workers. Our new Youth Guarantee will ensure every young person has a path, through education, an apprenticeship, or a paid work placement. And we are rolling out free breakfast clubs to 2,000 more schools next year, helping 500,000 more children get a better start to the day.
We’re focused on building for the future, from launching new towns to tackle the housing crisis, to introducing targeted maintenance grants so students aren’t forced to work every hour to get by. We’re driving up skills, aiming for two-thirds of young people to achieve higher qualifications by 25, and breaking down barriers in tech through a new Women’s Tech Taskforce.
And we’re putting Labour values into action with a pledge to deliver a library in every primary school because every child, no matter their background, deserves the chance to read, learn, and explore.
The road to renewal is long, but it is well underway. These are just some of the many announcements made at conference that show the scale of our ambition and the depth of our commitment. I left Liverpool reflecting on what we’ve achieved so far, and even more determined to keep building a Britain that works for everyone.
