It’s been a whirlwind few weeks in Westminster since returning from a busy summer in the constituency, and I’m pleased to share that I’ve been appointed as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Building Safety, Fire and Democracy at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

It’s a wide-ranging brief covering issues that affect people across the country every day, building safety, fire policy, local democracy, energy efficiency and the Government’s ongoing response to the Grenfell tragedy. These are serious and complex areas of policy, and I’m looking forward to getting stuck in.

Since being elected in December 2022, I’ve served in a number of roles, first as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the then Shadow Chancellor, then as an Opposition Whip. Following the General Election, I was appointed as a Senior Government Whip and Vice-Chamberlain of His Majesty’s Household, which came with a few unique traditions including being ceremonially ‘held hostage’ in Buckingham Palace during the State Opening of Parliament. It’s all part of the pageantry of Parliament, but it also speaks to the deep history and responsibility of the roles we hold.

Now, as a minister, I’ve swapped the whip’s notes for a red ministerial box. This is something many associate with official government business. It’s not just a practical tool for transporting documents: it’s a reminder of the responsibility that comes with public office. Seeing it arrive for the first time was a moment that really brought home the significance of the role I’ve been trusted to carry out.

Representing Chester North and Neston in Parliament has always been, and remains, my primary duty. What this new role allows me to do is take the priorities and perspectives of our area right into the heart of Government. Whether it’s housing standards, public safety or democratic access, I’ll be making sure our local experience helps shape national decisions.

As always, I’m here to listen. I’ll continue to hold regular surgeries and community visits, and my team and I are on hand to help with any issues you might be facing. You can contact me by emailing samantha.dixon.mp@parliament.uk, calling 01244 343 229 or writing to me at the following address: Houses of Parliament, London SW1A 0AA.

I’m looking forward to the work ahead and to continuing to deliver for our community, both locally and nationally.
