Last week, we marked Armed Forces Week—a time to honour the extraordinary service of the men and women who defend our country, the families who support them, as well as our veterans, reservists and cadets. I am proud to represent an area with long historic links with our armed forces.
In an increasingly uncertain world—whether it’s the war in Ukraine, instability in the Middle East, or growing threats to our cyber security—I know many in our community are deeply concerned about global events. That’s why I’m proud of the strong leadership our Prime Minister is showing on the world stage. At last week’s G7 and NATO summits, the UK secured vital commitments on defence investment, international security, and support for Ukraine —paid for using frozen Russian assets.
Here at home, Labour is turning the page on over a decade of decline in defence. In just 11 months, we’ve delivered the biggest Armed Forces pay rise in 20 years, ensured that no member of our military earns below the National Living Wage, and committed more than £7 billion to transform military housing. We’re reversing the failed 1996 sell-off of Forces homes and bringing 36,000 properties back into public ownership, including 200 right here in Chester North and Neston.
Last week, I was pleased to attend the Armed Forces Day flag-raising at Parliament and joined Veterans Minister Al Carns to mark the launch of the new Defence Consumer Charter—setting out new rights for military families in housing, including urgent repairs, fair treatment and stronger complaints systems. This is about delivering homes fit for our heroes.
We’re also delivering real support for veterans, including the new £50 million VALOUR programme, providing access to housing, employment and mental health services. We’ve launched a £75 million compensation scheme for LGBT veterans wronged by historic discrimination, and we’re expanding wraparound childcare for service families.
From cadets just starting out, to veterans who have served, and the families who support them all—thank you for all you do. Your dedication, resilience, and sacrifice form the backbone of our national security and our community’s strength. I’m proud to represent an area that values and supports its Armed Forces. I will keep working to ensure you get the help and respect you deserve every day.
