Last week’s Spending Review is a bold plan for Britain’s renewal — and it brings real, tangible benefits to Chester North and Neston. From boosting the NHS and delivering new homes to upgrading transport and tackling the cost of living, this Spending Review is about investing in our public services, our economy, and our security.
Locally, I’m pleased to see that Cheshire West and Chester has been chosen to pilot a new bus franchising model, giving us more control over how local bus services are run. For too long, residents have been let down by unreliable and expensive services. This change means we can shape routes, fares and timetables around what our community actually needs — especially in more rural areas that have been under-served for years.
Rail also gets a boost. New funding will support upgrades to the North Wales Main Line and the Wrexham–Bidston line — vital links for local commuters, students, and families.
Housing is another clear priority, with the largest investment in affordable housing in a generation to help deliver 1.5 million new homes. Combined with funding to improve energy efficiency in existing homes and rebuild schools, this Spending Review tackles longstanding pressures on families head-on.
The Government is also taking serious action on the cost of living. The Warm Homes Plan will save families up to £600 a year on bills. And for our older residents, the revised Winter Fuel Payment scheme will now reach over three-quarters of pensioners in England and Wales — including many here in Chester North and Neston. Anyone with an income of £35,000 or less will qualify automatically, ensuring that help reaches those who need it most.
In health, an additional £29 billion per year for the NHS will deliver more appointments, reduce waiting times, and strengthen hospital services — with more doctors, more nurses, and faster care. Mental health support teams will now be available in all schools in England, giving young people the help they need, when they need it.
This Spending Review is a foundation for renewal — shaped by careful decisions and focused on delivering what our communities need most. Over the coming weeks, more details about local projects and investments will be announced, and I will make sure to keep you fully updated as these plans take shape here in Chester North and Neston.
