In the last two weeks of May, communities across the country came together to mark Love Your Local Market 2025 — a nationwide campaign recognising the vital role markets play in our local economies and community life. This year’s theme, Made by Markets, was a reminder of just how important these spaces are in nurturing small businesses, strengthening community ties, and adding character and vibrancy to our towns and cities.
Here in Chester North and Neston, we are fortunate to have some of the best markets in the country.
Since opening in late 2022, Chester Market has gone from strength to strength. With over five million visitors, this modern, vibrant space has firmly re-established itself as a key part of city life. Our market blends Chester’s proud trading heritage — stretching back over 2,000 years — with a fresh, welcoming environment that supports independent businesses and brings people together. From Geoff’s Family Butchers and Purely Pots to Digby and Champ, a fantastic variety of food stalls, and so many more fantastic traders, there’s something for everyone.
As we continue to see the Northgate development take shape, I am working hard with the Council to bring the final stages of the project into reality, further enhancing the area and ensuring Chester Market remains a key part of our city’s future.
We’re also fortunate to host the Makers Market in the Exchange Square, which fills the city centre with a brilliant atmosphere and showcases the best local crafts, food, and artisan products from across our region.
Just down the road, Neston Market, with roots dating back to 1728, continues to be a much-loved weekly tradition. It’s known for its friendly atmosphere and strong community spirit — qualities that have defined it for generations. In the mid-1800s, it was so popular that people would travel from North Wales across the River Dee estuary — on foot, ponies, donkeys and carts — just to get there. I recently had the pleasure of holding one of my constituency surgeries right at the heart of Neston Market, speaking to local residents in a warm, lively environment.
As your Member of Parliament, I’ll always stand up for our markets and everything they bring to our communities. If you haven’t been in a while, pop down, say hello, and see what’s on offer — every visit really does make a difference.
