In the last few weeks, many constituents have expressed their concerns about the increasingly fragile state of global affairs. I’m sure many readers continue to follow the events in Ukraine as the situation continues to dominate global discussions.
As the war in Ukraine continues, it is more important than ever that we stand firm in our support for those fighting for their freedom. Ukraine’s resilience in the face of hardship is inspiring, and testament to the courage of its people defending their sovereignty.
I was honoured and moved to stand with the local Ukrainian community and all Ukrainians at a recent vigil at the Wesley Centre. The event was a powerful reminder of the compassion and unity within our local community. and a privilege to witness the deep solidarity of the people of Chester, united in their support for Ukraine.
Our city has always been a place of welcome, and a city of sanctuary. Cheshire West and Chester Council was recently awarded the Sanctuary Award, a testament to the values that define us as a community.
I am proud of the leadership our Prime Minister has shown, uniting allies and demonstrating Britain’s commitment to global stability. It was also a moment of pride to see President Zelensky welcomed to Number 10, greeted by cheering crowds on his arrival.
From the start of this crisis, the UK has been unwavering in its support for Ukraine. This year the UK is providing £4.5b in military support to Ukraine, as well as signing a historic 100 year partnership with Ukraine that will enhance trade, culture, and military ties.
As we continue to stand with Ukraine, we must focus on securing lasting peace and upholding Ukraine’s sovereignty, ensuring stability for Europe and beyond.
Achieving peace in Ukraine requires a sustained commitment to defence. That’s why the Government is increasing defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027.
This investment will also benefit our economy. Britain’s defence industry already supports 400,000 jobs, driving innovation and new technologies. By increasing defence spending, we’re not just securing borders but creating skilled jobs that enhance our sovereign capabilities. National security and economic prosperity go hand in hand.
By strengthening our defences, we reaffirm our commitment to peace and security in Ukraine and across Europe. Together, we must face this challenge and guarantee a secure future for all.
