Parliament Week aims to encourage children and young people to learn more about and get involved with how Parliament and our democracy works.
This year, Parliament Week will run from 18th – 24th November, with events taking place across the country.
Youth groups, community organisations and schools in constituencies across the United Kingdom have already signed up to join in this year. Last year, more than1.6 million people took part in every nation and region of the UK, and many countries all over the world.
This year, Samantha Dixon, the Member of Parliament for Chester North and Neston is holding her own local competition to encourage young people to get involved.
The ‘My Local Area’ competition, calls on anyone aged between 5-18 to submit one of the following by 1st November:
- A short essay, story or poem about what you love and what is most important to you in your local area. (500 words max)
- A short video explaining what you love about your local area. (1min max)
- Drawing or piece of art to represent what you love most about your local area.
Entries can be sent to samantha.dixon.mp@parliament.uk or to Samantha Dixon MP, Houses of Parliament, London, SW1A 0AA.
Samantha is hoping to visit two winners, one of primary school age and one of secondary school age to congratulate the winners with a special prize during Parliament Week later in November.
Commenting on the competition, Sam said:
“I think it is really important for young people to get involved in our democracy and I admire the work UKPW do every year to promote the work of Parliament with young people.
“This year, I wanted to encourage as many young people across Chester North and Neston to get involved and this could be a great opportunity for them to let their local MP know what they value most about their local area where they live.
“It is also important for me to hear about the priorities of our young people. They may not be able to vote yet, but their voices are just as important, and I represent everyone in the constituency.
“I look forward to receiving many creative entries. Good luck to all,” she added.
