The football season is upon us.
With the Olympics coming to an end last weekend, the football season is back just in time to fulfil our sporting void.
I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate every single member of Team GB for their achievements and passion at the Paris Olympics, taking away an incredible 65 medals and beating the total from Tokyo. I’d also like to wish the very best of luck to Paralympics GB who I have no doubt will create more unforgettable moments later this month.
Back to football. I am very much looking forward to the first home game of the season at Chester FC after the first away match at Spennymoor last weekend.
Last month, it was a pleasure to join Will Lamb and directors of Chester FC at a pre-season friendly when the team beat Altrincham. An exciting match and brilliant day.
Like many, Chester FC is close to my heart. I remember watching Ian Rush playing at the old ground when I was a kid and have enjoyed supporting our club. It was great to meet club historian, Chas Sumner, a wonderful source of real knowledge on all things Chester FC.
Everyone remembers the tough times Chester FC went through and how it emerged as a fan-led club. I am pleased the new Government has committed to the long-awaited Football Governance Bill during the King’s speech last month. I will work closely with Ministers to ensure local voices and experiences from Chester FC and fans are at the heart of decision making as the Bill makes its way through Parliament.
Here in Chester, we know that a local football club is more than just a club. It’s an integral part of our communities.
Now, more than ever, after the unrest we’ve seen over recent weeks, the club’s motto “Our City, Our Community, Our Club” has an even deeper meaning. The part Chester FC plays in our community, is vital for community cohesion, fitness and fun. Under the leadership of Jim Green, the club continues to be an important asset to communities across Chester, from the Community Trust, the youth club and so much more.
I’ve got my season ticket for Chester Women’s FC and am looking forward to fitting in as many games as possible this season.
If you’ve not done so before, get yourself down to the Deva Stadium to support the team, it is a great day out.
Here’s to a successful season for Chester FC.
