Since opening in late 2022, Chester’s new market has become a staple in the tapestry of Chester.

With an array of traders and produce, the market has welcomed three and a half million visitors from all over the world.

Goods have been traded in Chester for well over 2,000 years, however the history of the market in Chester dates back to the 12th century when it was established as a trading hub for local farmers and merchants.

The markets were originally hosted on the streets and Rows, with the focus in Market Square, outside the current Forum entrance. Over the years, the market in Chester has adapted and changed to meet the needs of the community and become the modern and busting place we know and love today.

I am pleased to see the new market keeps going from strength to strength. Last weekend, I joined market industry leaders from across Europe, traders, and local representatives to celebrate the success of Chester market and launch the ‘Love Your Market’ campaign which runs from 17th May to 1st June.

The campaign aims to highlight the huge contribution local markets make to our towns and cities. Creating jobs, promoting local produce and small businesses, and serving a vital role in our local communities and local economy.

With over 25 countries and more than 400 markets taking part in the UK alone, it is yet another brilliant achievement for Chester Market to be selected to host the launch of this prestigious campaign. It is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of all traders and staff without whom the market could not be.

It was a fantastic event and an honour to once again see Chester leading the way on a global stage and congratulations to Cheshire West and Chester Council for creating such a fantastic asset in our city.

Whether it’s popping in for a drink or some food, picking up a treat for your dog, visiting the fantastic butchers or picking a beautiful flower arrangement or plant from Purely Pots, Chester Market is a gem in our city and a central point in our community.

I’m sure we are all proud of what it has achieved so far and can’t wait to see what it will bring over the years to come.

If you’ve not visited the new Chester Market, get yourself down there and experience all it has to offer.
