Next Thursday 2nd May we will see voters heading to the polls in a number of different local elections across the country. Here in Chester and throughout Cheshire, voters will have the chance to have their say in the Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections.

The role of a PCC is an important one. This position plays a vital role in shaping the safety and security of our communities.

The Police and Crime Commissioner serves as a vital link between the public and law enforcement agencies, ensuring accountability, setting strategic priorities, allocating resources and setting the police budget, and fostering community engagement. Their decisions directly impact the effectiveness of policing efforts and the well-being of residents across Chester and Cheshire.

They are your voice in the police service and hold the Chief Constable to account.

Despite the importance of the role, PCC elections regularly see a very low turnout. With the average turnout in the country only at 34.1% during the last PCC elections in 2021, with Cheshire showing only a 23% turnout.

Voting is an important part of our democracy and local and PPC elections are a crucial way for residents to have their say on local priorities.

With so many new barriers being put in place to voting, such as individual registration, voter identification requirements for both voting in-person and for postal votes despite the very small instances of fraud, exercising your right to vote is more important than ever.

Every vote will matter on 2nd May.

With a General Election looming, this election can also serve as an opportunity for many who may have not had the chance to vote before to familiarise themselves with our voting system. It is vital to be ready to have your say when the Prime Minister finally decides to go to the polls and call a General Election.

On 2nd of May, you will have a chance to influence how your local police service works through the elections of the Police and Crime Commissioner so make sure you are informed and ready to have your say.
